Parvus Corporation recently announced the release of its MultiComm 8-port serial controller module, a communications solution delivering RS-232/422/485, Ethernet, and CAN protocol functionality for embedded PC/104 computer systems.

According to Parvus, the MultiComm supports eight independent asynchronous serial channels, 10MBps Ethernet and two Control Area Network (CAN) ports.

The board’s 16C550C serial ports operate at up to 921.6kbps and are configured in pairs via software as either eight RS-232, or four RS-232 and four RS-422/485 ports (capable of controlling up to 132 devices in a multi-drop environment).

Its Ethernet controller is NE2000 compatible and has both TP and AUI outputs. Both CAN ports are implemented using the Intel 82527 chip, which supports the fieldbus CAN specification 2.0 Part B and Part A and performs all serial communications functions such as transmission and reception of messages, message filtering, transmit search and interrupt search with minimal interaction from the host microcontroller.

For customers implementing Ethernet functionality, an external adapter is available with transceiver that connects the AUI interface to TP (10BaseT).

Adapters for the two CAN ports are also available, which provide a galvanically isolated physical interface compatible with the ISO/DIS 11898 standard.

The MultiComm module is sold in two configurations: serial ports only (PRV-5021X-01) and fully loaded with serial, Ethernet, CAN and DIO (PRV-5022X-01).Either version can be qualified to extended temperature ranges (-40 degrees C to +85 degrees), on request.
