Compressed air efficiency

Ingersoll-Rand claims that the additional costs and inherent complications involved in controlling output using a variable speed drive, can provide worthwhile energy savings over the part-load controls already in use in compressors today.

The company believes that for many compressed air users, variable speed drive compressors are not the best available option. It is much better for the typical compressed air user to invest a similar amount of money to buy a premium efficiency compressor such as an SSR two-stage rotary screw air compressor from 75kW to 350kW. Such a compressor is particularly efficient at the most frequently applied loads between 60% to 100%. Studies have indicated that this is the most typical duty range of an industrial compressor. In fact, the SSR provides better efficiency across full loads than a single stage machine fitted with a variable speed drive.
