The wining solar powered car in the Sunrayce from Indianapolis to Colorado Springs was helped on its way by a hefty injection of CFD (computational fluid dynamics). Midnight Sun IV was built by the students of the University of Waterloo USA. When they realised they were running short of time to develop the car they turned to AEA Technology for computer software which could help them quickly design a car which was aerodynamically perfect – clearly it worked. Computer testing done before the car was built eliminated much of the need for post production debugging that’s needed by most vehicles, allowing the students to get their car to the race qualifying grounds in time.
