The CASS (Conformity Assessment of Safety-related Systems) project has reached a watershed with the end of the first phase of the project and the establishment of a company, The CASS Scheme, to continue with the establishment of an assessment scheme to IEC 61508 (the functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety systems).
To date the CASS scheme has concentrated efforts on producing a scheme for Functional Safety Capability Assessment (FSCA), which is UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredited, and enables the ability of an organisation to produce products conforming to the standard to be assessed. This scheme can be applied throughout the supply chain, encompassing all from widget manufacturers to system integrators.
The CASS Scheme Ltd. has been set up to manage and maintain schedules thus establishing integrity and credibility with industry. The company is already developing assessor competency requirements and has enlisted the support of a team of 22 expert interviewers.
* Sira Certification Service claims to be the first certification body to seek UKAS accreditation for the CASS scheme. This move means that companies, for the first time, can benefit from a common certification scheme that provides independent, accredited third party endorsement of plant and product safety.
