Open to engineering students and apprentices who have faced obstacles or personal challenges, the programme provides £1,000 a year to successful applicants over the course of their studies. Having taken on an initial cohort of six young engineers in 2016, this year’s scheme will provide funding for an additional 10 grants, supported by National Grid.
“We have created these awards to ensure that personal circumstances aren’t a barrier for new talent entering the profession whether that is at student or apprentice level,” said Jeremy Watson, IET president.
“These awards send a clear message to young people: a career as an engineer or technician is a choice for anyone regardless of their background, gender, financial or personal circumstances. We are delighted that National Grid has pledged to support this programme and strongly encourage more companies to come forward and engage with these future engineers.”
Layla Graham, a recipient of a bursary in the scheme’s inaugural year, says the funding enabled her to attend training events and get involved in volunteering opportunities that would otherwise not have been possible.
“I was honoured to receive the IET Engineering Horizons Bursary,” said Layla. “It’s fantastic how the IET recognises student engineers who have come from different backgrounds and qualifications to get onto a degree programme. As a student and mother of a young family I am using the bursary to enable me to volunteer.”
