Raytheon’s Long Range Advanced Scout Surveillance System (LRAS3) contract has been modified by the US Army to extend production through to January 2008 and to increase its value to $172 million.
LRAS3 is a long-range sensor system that gives Army reconnaissance troops the ability to detect, recognise and identify distant targets in real time.
The system’s target location capability is provided by an advanced second-generation forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor, a global positioning interferometer, an eye-safe laser range finder and a television camera.
The system will soon be fielded as the Stryker Brigade’s long-range reconnaissance sensor. Stryker Brigade was conceived in 2000 as a ‘medium weight’ armoured vehicle force, filling an operational gap between the US Army’s heavy and light forces.
Raytheon is now under contract to incorporate a laser designator into LRAS3. The laser capability upgrade will qualify LRAS3 for the Stryker andKnight fire support vehicles, which support the US Army’s field artillery.
Glynn Raymer, vice president of Raytheon Combat Systems said, ‘LRAS3 is the eyes of the reconnaissance community. It lets a soldier identify an enemy before that enemy can engage.’
