Mindspeed Technologies has announced what it claims are the industry’s first 72×72 and 144×144 crosspoint switches optimised for broadcast video applications.
Both the 72×72 M21131V and the 144×144 M21151V devices support data rates up to 1.6 Gbps on each channel, enabling any combination of SD (143 Mbps to 540 Mbps) or HD (1.4835 or 1.485 Gbps) digital video traffic.
Third-generation programmable input equalization (IE) circuitry removes deterministic jitter and enables 1.6 Gbps signals to be received through 60 inches of FR4 PCB traces and four backplane connectors without any power penalty or bit errors, and output pre-emphasis circuitry further enhances backplane driving capability without consuming any additional power.
The devices also include on-chip I/O termination and operate from a single power supply. Power consumption is typically 6W for the M21131V and 12W for the M21151V with all channels configured and active.
The patented design of the M21131V and M21151V devices provides the necessary channel-isolation capabilities to eliminate crosstalk interference while maintaining low power consumption. The protocol-agnostic switches also support standard Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) data rates of 143, 177, 270, 360, 540, 1483.5/1485 Mbps, as well as any combination of 1x Fibre Channel (1.0625 Gbps), Gigabit Ethernet (1.25 Gbps) or other data rates below 1.6 Gbps.
Other features include Mindspeed’s PowerScaler power-conservation technology, which further reduces already-low power consumption by dynamically scaling switch settings, and SmartPower, which enables unused portions of the devices to be disabled, either manually or automatically, without host overhead or intervention.
Built-in test features are provided by a fourth-generation, fully independent pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) transmitter/receiver that eliminates the need for external equipment to test high-speed signal integrity, and a JitterMeter™ capability that allows the host controller to qualitatively measure the jitter of the incoming signal.
The M21131V and M21151V devices are each packaged in an 1156-terminal, 35-mm ceramic ball grid array (CBGA) with a case temperature range of 0 degrees C to 95 degrees C. Per-unit OEM pricing in volumes of 1,000 is $495 for the M21131V and $950 for the M21151V.
Evaluation modules, reference designs and samples are available now, with volume production scheduled to begin in January 2004.
