Delphi Automotive Systems has acquired a new brake technology from Federal-Mogul Corporation. Advanced Disc System (ADS) is a new concept in foundation brakes featuring decreased mass, lower cost and better fuel economy. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
ADS brake technology features an assembly that uses fewer components and opens the possibility of downsizing, or completely eliminating, booster components. The technology has proven it can reduce the mass of a brake corner assembly by 25 percent and reduce system operating pressure by 50 percent.
‘While it was a worthwhile project, we realised that the ADS concept did not fit with our core business priorities,’ said Chuck Grant, Federal-Mogul’s vice president of corporate development and strategic planning.
With the acquisition of ADS technology, Delphi will assume responsibility for multiple development arrangements with leading European vehicle manufacturers. Delphi’s acquisition of ADS technology includes all assets, intellectual property and specialized testing and development machinery related to ADS.
Federal-Mogul’s ADS technology management and engineering team will transfer to Delphi and assist in bringing the technology to market. Approximately 25 Federal-Mogul employees associated with the ADS project, located in Rugby, England, have transferred to Delphi.
