After the agreement is finalised, development will begin in earnest with mass production starting in 2010.
According to a statement, demand for diesel engines has been growing, especially with the European market calling for the lowering of CO2 emissions. Mitsubishi Motors, in parallel with its efforts in electric vehicles, is developing this engine as a nucleus of its environmentally friendly technology.
The engine will be a two-litre class unit aimed for use in small to mid-sized cars. In addition to meeting the strict Euro 5 emissions standard, the aim is for the unit to achieve best-in-class levels of output and emissions performance.
Engine development will be completed in mid-2009 and then introduced to Mitsubishi Motors’ key European market models.
