Young people will opt for careers in engineering if they understand the part it can play in securing a ‘fairer, greener and richer Britain’ says Minister for Science, Energy and Industry John Battle.
He called on engineers and the engineering profession to make a major contribution to the debate about sustainable development initiated by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott in the Green Paper ‘Opportunities for Change’.
He said: ‘Young people are passionate about the protection of the environment. I believe that if we are to attract the brightest of our young people into engineering, we must tap into this enthusiasm and promote the major role which engineering has to play in improving the quality of life through environmental solutions.’
He continued: ‘The debate provides an ideal opportunity to promote clean engineering to today’s environmentally aware young people and attract them into engineering.’
