Engineering skills shortage tackled

Manufacturers and industrialists in the North of England are tackling the chronic shortage of engineering skills that has affected the region for years. They have backed plans for a new private sector funded training and development centre that will provide a continual stream of highly skilled engineers.

The post-school Centre for Excellence is to be built at Tanfield Lea in County Durham. It already has the backing of local partners including schools, Durham TEC, Derwentside District Council and Derwentside College, as well as support from companies in the private sector such as Aerospace Systems & Technology and Radford Shelving Systems.

The emphasis will be on training engineers for companies involved in the scheme using the latest in hi-tech IT systems, top quality facilities and buildings, state-of-the art telecommunications, industrial equipment and the very best tutors.
