Expanding transformers

Prolec GE has announced a $50m project to expand its manufacturing capabilities in Monterrey, Mexico.

Prolec GE, a joint venture between GE Energy and Xignux, an electrical transformer supplier to the utility industry, has announced a $50m project to expand its manufacturing capabilities in Monterrey, Mexico.

The expansion, which will increase the production of two of Prolec GE’s product lines, aims to address the needs of utilities, EPC firms, developers and independent power producers.

The expansion will enable Prolec GE’s power transformer line to include transformers up to 1,000MVA with voltages up to 550kV. The commercial transformer line is expected to increase its current production volume over 30 percent to support the growing demand of the wind generation market.

Shipments from the new lines are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2008 for commercial transformers and the second half of 2009 for power transformers.
