ZBD Displays has developed advanced liquid crystal (LC) mixtures for use with its grating aligned zenithal bi-stable displays. The development was made possible through a joint development program with Merck that was initiated 18 months ago.
ZBD’s display technology allows images to be kept on a display indefinitely without the use of any power and without image degradation, even under severe mechanical stresses. This characteristic offers power savings for handheld devices, extending battery life and enabling the size and weight of the devices to be reduced.
The new LC mixtures developed by Merck and ZBD are capable of producing fast update speeds using low voltage commercial drivers over a wide temperature range. As a result of these advantages, ZBD’s displays are now expected to find a home in mobile phones and smart watches.
The results of the collaboration between ZBD Displays Limited and Merck will be presented for the first time at the International Symposium of the Society for Information Display (SID 2003), May 18-23, 2003, Baltimore, USA.
