First extra high strength steels

Hot rolled Domex 550W and cold reduced Docol 700W are claimed by SSAB Swedish Steel to be the world’s first extra high strength steels with weather resistant properties.

Originally developed for the container industry, the steels are also suitable for fabrication of railway carriages and wagons, vehicle chassis, bridges, chimneys and masts, where high strength has to combine with good resistance to corrosion. Typical applications in the container market include corner posts, cross members, corner casting protection plates, sills and headers.

An oxide layer forms on the surface of the steel in use, impeding corrosion-inducing moisture from entering the steel. Lighter, stronger constructions can be achieved wherever there is the likelihood of exposure to moisture, resulting in improved performance with reduced dead weight. Thicknesses range from 3-6mm from Domex and 0.5-2mm for Docol.
