Electrical current flashovers can quickly lead to erosion of ball bearing surfaces, and break down the lubricant film producing noise, raceway damage, vibration and eventual bearing failure. To overcome the problem, SKF has developed the Insocoat range of insulated bearings which can be retrofitted to replace existing bearing types in motors and generators.
The new design will withstand an electrical potential of up to 500V as standard for bearings with shaft diameters between 55mm and 150mm. To special order, bearings can be specified for up to 1,000V.
