A joint venture between Matsushita Electric and Toray Industries is to open a $835 million plant in Japan in November 2005 to manufacture Plasma Display Panels.
The company – Matsushita Plasma Display Panel (MPDP) – will be located in the Osaka Bay area, in Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture. It will have a production capacity of over 250,000 PDPs monthly and more than 3 million annually.
The new plant is Panasonic’s fourth PDP manufacturing facility. In addition to two current plants in Japan, the company also operates a PDP plant in China – Shanghai Matsushita Plasma Display.
The Japanese market for plasma TVs alone is expected to run to 450,000 units in 2004, thanks to the launch of terrestrial digital broadcasting in Japan at the end of 2003 and the Athens Olympics in the summer of 2004.
By 2008, PDP worldwide demand is expected to exceed 10 million units per year and worth 3 trillion yen.
