GM turns to new composite

Dow Automotive is supplying a new reinforced reaction injection moulded (RRIM) polyurea polymer for the rear bumpers of General Motors’ 1999 Sportride trucks. The company says that this new polymer – Spectrim HH 390 – is the first RRIM polymer designed to withstand the temperatures experienced by GM’s ELPO and paint line ovens.

Dow Automotive worked closely with GM and Polyrim to develop the material, part design and tool design for the Sportride bumpers. The company believes that it is the largest production RRIM body panel ever produced.
