Gripen gets HMDs

The Swedish Air Force has ordered Saab’s latest version of Helmet Mounted Displays for it’s new generation Gripen fighters in a deal worth $54m

The Swedish Air Force has ordered Saab’s latest version of Helmet Mounted Displays (HMD) for it’s new generation Gripen fighters in a deal worth $54m.

The HMD system, which includes BAE Systems‘ Cobra helmet, displays weapon and basic flight data directly onto the helmet visor giving the pilot a ‘heads-up’ display at all times.

‘This order is further evidence of the confidence Sweden has in Gripen,’ said Lennart Sindahl, business unit manager at Saab. ‘HMD further improves the Swedish Gripen fleet’s already expansive operating capacity.’

Saab described the HMD as a key element of the advanced systems fit in the Gripen, which has already been ordered by the South African Air Force.
