Honeywell Industrial Control has been selected by BP as the integrated control and safety system (ICSS) supplier for the development of the Clair field, west of the Shetland Islands, UK, and has received a contract for front-end engineering and design.
Engineers from BP, Honeywell, Noble Drilling and Mustang Engineering, have formed an integrated project team to define the scope and anticipated costs of the Clair project. The Clair team is initially based in Houston to take advantage of best practices from similar Gulf of Mexico developments.
BP, with majority ownership, will operate the asset. Additional partners include Amerada Hess, Chevron, Conoco and Enterprise Oil. Should the Clair project receive development approval later this year, Honeywell will provide the full scope of the integrated control and safety system, from field instrumentation, including fire and gas devices, through Honeywell Hi-Spec Solutions software, including management information systems and provision for advanced control and a simulation system.
This broad solution will be coupled with ongoing maintenance services. Expected total value of the Honeywell solution is estimated in the range of $7 to $10 million. Honeywell would be involved in project implementation through the commissioning and first oil in 2004 and in managing the systems operation through 2009.
As a provider of supply chain optimisation, Hi-Spec Solutions aims to help companies maximise profitability through an integrated approach to improving manufacturing performance, expanding asset capability and enabling improved decision making across the supply chain.
Terry Hughes, BP’s Clair Delivery manager, said: ‘With the Clair project, we’ve initiated a new method of vendor selection, where a few suppliers provide a broad scope of products and services over the life of the field. We chose Honeywell for the Clair project because of our previous successful experience with the company and our need for the best solutions available.’
John Weber, president of Honeywell Control, commented: ‘We are pleased and excited to have the opportunity to deliver technologies and project value, and to demonstrate our leadership in the oil and gas exploration and production business.’
