Hewlett Packard has developed a miniature wireless data chip that could be attached to or embedded in almost any object, making available information commonly found on larger electronic devices.
The chip, which is approximately the size of a grain of rice, is a memory device with a built-in antenna. Called Memory Spot, the device could also be used to help prevent drug counterfeiting, as they contain secure information about the make and quality of medications and added to containers to prove the drug’s authenticity.
Other potential applications include storing medical records on a hospital patient’s wristband, adding security to ID cards and passports and providing audiovisual supplements to postcards and photos.
