Industry demands recognition

The chairman of the British Metallurgical Plant Constructors’ Association (BMPCA), Kevin Parkin, has urged

media and politicians to recognise the importance of manufacturing in the recovery of the British economy.

The Association, which represents companies in the metals process industry, claims that despite the economic downturn, many of its members have helped to secure employment in the UK and won valuable contracts overseas.

The BMPCA say this is down to the globalisation of steel, aluminium and other non-ferrous manufacturing. They also believe that the nuclear industry will create a number of opportunities for those who have a high level of metals and engineering skills.

Parkin, who is also director of Sheffield heavy engineering manufacturer, DavyMarkham, said: ‘Our own order book is presently full and the works is operating at capacity, so we’re fairly buoyant. Nevertheless, as the world economy slows, trade associations such as ours can provide the high-quality market intelligence that will enable UK companies to continue winning business abroad.’
