£1.5 billion will be invested by process industry users on information technology (IT) in the UK this year, according to a survey released by Independent Exhibitions, organiser of the Computers in Manufacturing (CIM) Show.

Yet, declares the survey, carried out by Benchmark Research, many IT vendors fail to address the needs of the process sector. The survey was used by Independent to evaluate the demand for the new Process 97 event – claimed to be the first process-specific IT solutions event – at CIM from 4-6 November at the NEC, Birmingham.

`Not all IT suppliers are familiar with process industries,’ said Yukikazu Natori of Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp. `The IT industry has to establish relationships with the industry to improve their knowledge. In terms of IT infrastructure it’s getting better – but software suppliers seem very far from the requirement. It’s a global problem.’
