We’re on the verge of another SCADA revolution – through ActiveX. This is Microsoft’s open standard that lets software objects interact in a network regardless of their code – it’s managed by the Active Group, a vendor association, itself part of the Open Group founded last year.
ActiveX includes Controls, Documents and Scripts. But its the Controls that are the point here. These are intelligent graphical objects, like our RS Tools – building blocks that let you create, for example, MMIs and SCADA screens with sophisticated multi-media. There are thousands of them.
With ActiveX Controls there’s no more `little-bit-of-code’ to write; instead you soft wire the Controls. So there’s massive scope for very easy customising.
That’s the crux. It means you no longer have to pay for SCADA development and run time licences. You buy the Controls you need. There’s no more licences to buy. You own what you create no matter how many times you re-use it.
It’s not yet the death of SCADA packages. Early adopters will be OEMs. But things are changing very fast. So watch this space!
