AEA Technology is to build a recycling plant for lithium-ion batteries – probably in Japan – within the next six months.

The UK firm has developed an electrochemical process for recycling batteries that recovers the lithium salts, cobalt and organic compounds and leaves only small amounts of carbon as unusable waste.

It has built a pilot plant at its Culham laboratories in Oxfordshire and is looking to exploit the technology commercially.
