The contracts provide for follow-up technology transfer deals worth £4.3bn over the next 11 years. The main defence order is for 24 Hawk lead-in fighter jet trainers, nine two-seater JAS39 Gripen light fighter trainers produced in conjunction with Sweden’s Saab group, and 19 single-seat Gripens. BAE Systems and Saab will also work on non-defence industrial collaboration projects with South Africa, including projects in the automotive, electricity power generation, engineering and metals processing sectors.
