Metal industry rivals sharpen their swords (The Engineer 5 March) is a good headline, but the aluminium industry is not quite as belligerent as this story suggests.

As a consultant to the aluminium industry, I take my hat off to the 32 steel companies working on the Ulsab project for a lightweight steel car body.

But it is time for the car industry to decide how it is going to respond to the challenge of environmental legislation that will demand vehicle weight savings.

What disappoints aluminium producers is the car industry’s failure to recognise that they have at their elbow a well-established set of aluminium alloys to meet the demands of the 21st century.
