UK component suppliers need to change fundamentally the way they manage their relationships with key customers according to Ray Smith, (pictured left) general manager of Mercedes-Benz purchasing UK office, who said the firm wanted to increase the £200m a year it spends with UK firms. ‘I am sometimes surprised by the inward-looking attitude taken by some large component manufacturers in the UK who expect to do business with Mercedes-Benz without, for example, one person on the team who can speak German.’ The comments were made at the Coopers & Lybrand automotive briefing last week.
