An international industry team led by Babcock Defence Systems has won what it says is a breakthrough contract for a new naval sonar system.

The £10m project definition contract on the Royal Navy’s Sonar 2087 will last 18 months. Another £10m project definition contract went to a team led by Thomson Marconi Sonar.

A winner may be chosen in early 1999, leading to orders worth between £100m-£200m for sonars to re-equip the navy’s 16 Type 23 frigates.
