Matra BAe Dynamics has secured a £200m deal with the Defence Procurement Agency to supply Rapier ground-to-air Mark 2 missiles.

The order has been placed under the Smart Procurement Initiative, under which the MoD’s Ground-Based Air Defence Procurement Team and Matra Bae Dynamics and its suppliers will work closely towards achieving a 20% saving against original estimates.

The order is for the supply of both new and refurbished missiles, with deliveries due to start in 2002. The contract will secure 360 jobs: 70 at BAe’s Stevenage, Lostock and Bristol sites, the rest at its suppliers throughout the UK.

The missiles will allow the UK armed forces to maintain their short range air defence capability well into the next century.
