A wireless computing network is being set up in Bath, Somerset, as part of a three-year research project that could influence the future of mobile phone technology.

The Cityware project, based at the University of Bath, will turn the city centre into a ‘pervasive’ computing zone where users have constant access to computer services.

Volunteers will be able to access some of the advanced applications and services likely to appear on the next generation of mobile phones, laptops and hand-held computers.

Their preferences will guide designers developing new applications for devices such as mobile phones.
