Industrial users stand to gain from the six-month delay in introducing competition to the domestic electricity market, it has emerged.

Operations needing more than 100kW – which can already shop around for electricity – are likely to cash in by buying cheap power from suppliers who signed advance contracts with generators in the expectation of supplying the domestic market from April.

The Major Energy Users’ Council expressed ‘anger and frustration’ at the delay on behalf of members with sites in the under-100kW market. Spokesman Don McGarrigle said the regulator should make the electricity companies carry the costs.
