The lives of offshore workers will be put at risk by BP Amoco’s plan to dispense with standby vessels on its North Sea installations, the Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel Association said. It pointed out that helicopters had been unable to rescue a single survivor from the burning Piper Alpha platform in 1988, in which 167 workers perished.
