BP aims to have sales of $1bn in the solar power market by the end of the decade, John Browne, chief executive, said this week.

Addressing a meeting at Stanford University in California, Browne said that BP was interested in alternative sources of energy and that solar power could make a significant contribution, although it was currently twice as expensive as conventional forms of electricity generation.

BP, which has 10% of the market worldwide, would be increasing its manufacturing capability in the sector. This would include the completion of a new faciltiy in California by the end of 1997.
