Continuous investment in production efficiency by British Steel at its Scunthorpe plant includes the development of process mass spectrometry, with VG Gas Analysis Systems.

BS is currently commissioning its eighth Prima 600 system at Scunthorpe, which will be for a coke oven application. Others are used at the plant for blast furnace gas analysis.

Measurement takes just 10 seconds per analysis, with an accuracy of 0.1%.

Nitrogen, argon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, steam and hydrogen mass balance calculations are carried out, and the precision of the CO/CO2 data is now so good that thermal calculations are possible directly from the mass spectrometer data, rather than using signals from traditional infrared or thermal conductivity instruments.
