Graduates applying for jobs at British Telecom next year will have to submit their applications on-line.
The telecoms giant will only accept paper applications in special cases from the 700 people it needs to recruit in the year 2000.
`If they cannot get on-line, then we can use paper – but only as a last resort,’ said Paula Bewey, BT human resources policy manager.
Recruiters will still attend career fairs, but BT will not publish a graduate recruitment brochure – only a small leaflet which points to its web site.
`We want to encourage applicants to use the internet,’ said Bewey. `It is the business we are in.’
The cost savings for the company have yet to be calculated, but Bewey denied this was the main motivation behind the move.
