A device for cleaning up diesel engine exhaust fumes is to be evaluated for heavy-duty diesel engines by Caterpillar. The Electrocat gas plasma filter, developed by AEA Technology, will be tested using a 10.3-litre engine in a programme backed by the US Department of Energy. The Electrocat passes an electric current through exhaust gases to produce a plasma that chemically breaks down soot and gaseous hydrocarbons.
