Industry could cut more than £1bn from its annual energy bill by switching over to more combined heat and power, environment minister Michael Meacher said last week.
Speaking at a seminar in London, Meacher said the 3.5GW of CHP already in use was saving the country almost £500m a year enough to run three million company cars.
Meacher said that the goal of having 5GW of CHP installed by 2000 was just the beginning the figure could at least be doubled by 2010.
He said that the Government would ensure that companies wishing to install such plants in future did not face unnecessary barriers.
Apart from the cost savings, Meacher said the 70 90% energy-conversion efficiency of CHP versus 30 50% for conventional generation would contribute significantly to the Government’s target of cutting CO2 emissions to 1990 levels by 2000.
