Faster production line changes and better product quality uniformity have resulted from the modernisation of Kimberly-Clark’s paper products mill in Flint. An ageing control system and variable speed drives have been replaced by an Allen-Bradley PLC5 and flux vector controlled drives, from Cegelec.

The plant produces a range of industrial wipes and a material used in the manufacture of feminine hygiene products.

Improvements to the mill automation system include 13 new Cegelec GD3000 drives, whose speed holding capabilities virtually eliminate `necking’ or slack, either of which could break the paper.

The PLC5 communicates directly with an existing PLC2 via a Modbus serial communications module, and all alarm and speed information is displayed on the operator interface and fed to a central computer.

Considerable time savings can now be made with the new system, allowing the operator to change products and production requirements quickly and simply from one location.
