Externally splined drive hubs for clutches in automatic vehicle transmissions can now be produced as one-piece components from an inexpensive tubular blank using a novel combination of metal spinning and flow forming techniques. Developed by Leico, the process spins a length of tube while partially collapsing it to form a reduced diameter, thick-walled hub. Splines are then rolled into the outer face of the tube. The complete operation is done in one machining cycle and takes just 35 seconds.
