Toyota’s Crayon electric car, due to be launched in Japan in May, will be the first commuter hire car that can be booked over the internet.

The Crayon can be hired for shopping trips, journeys to and from local stations or airports, or used by tourists.

Featuring global satellite positioning and location by mobile phone, the tiny two-seater can be reserved over a closed internet system.

The Crayon Centre in Toyota City will track cars and allocate customers the nearest vehicle. Toyota plans to provide 50 cars around its HQ and local Motomachi heliport, and to sign up 300 regular customers.
