Here’s an example of the value of backwards compatibility. Greene King in Bury recently upgraded its control systems, based on 10 year old Omron PLCs.

System integrator was Briggs Automation, which built and installed the control system, again using Omron PLCs.

According to Neil Flint, Greene King’s project engineer, it was the compatibility of old and new PLCs that made the transition to the new system easy. Upgrading the C1000 PLCs to the latest CVM1 spec meant simply replacing the processor and rack. The original local and remote I/O were OK.

Flint: `Also, rather than a new control program having to be written, the existing program from the 10 year old C1000s was copied straight across to the new CVM1s with just a few mods.

`It meant the complete changeover was accomplished on one Friday afternoon!’
