Consortia win £100m MoD carrier study

Ministry of Defence contracts worth £100m to `assess options’ for two proposed aircraft carriers have been awarded to consortia led by British Aerospace Land and Sea Systems and Thomson-CSF NCS of France

The MoD has also selected Marconi Electronic Systems as the Type 45 destroyer’s prime contractor.

Baroness Symons, the defence procurement minister, said the carrier and destroyer programmes `will bring significant benefit to the UK shipbuilding industry, securing existing jobs and providing a significant number of new jobs well into the next millennium’.

She said the carriers will enter service in 2012 and 2015 and are likely to be the biggest warships ever built in Britain.

They will be around twice the size of the Invincible class.
