The Government will not take any concerted action on more than 600 uncharted radioactive waste dumps in the UK until next year at the earliest, it has emerged.

Michael Meacher, minister for environmental protection, said last week that the landfill burial sites at military and civilian locations throughout the country – mostly dating back to the 1950s and 1960s – constituted `a significant and serious form of contamination which should have been dealt with much earlier’.

Officials at the environment department confirmed this week that a consultation exercise into how best to apply the provisions of the 1995 Environment Act to radioactive contaminated land would not be launched until later this year.
