The Engineering Council is trying to get more engineering companies to become affiliate members. There are now about 150 industry affiliates.

Dr Ashley Catterall, former secretary of the Institute of Materials, said he can attract more small and medium sized businesses to the council.

For an annual fee dependent on company size – from £100 to £1,200 – firms get an inside track on the council’s representations to government and information on new standards and working practices.

Catterall does not see the council’s services as in competition with the engineering trade associations and institutes.

A survey of members showed they would like more briefings by council staff and seminars.

The new campaign is due to be launched within two months.
