Cranfield University is to team up with consultants Lotus Engineering and Reynard Racing Cars to develop a 150mpg car – although the car makers will not officially confirm the plan.

The Department of Trade and Industry funded project is being finalised and the partners hope to announce it at the Manufacturing Week show at Birmingham’s NEC in November.

Cranfield worked with Lotus on an `E-car’ (for environment and Europe) in the early 1990s.

Initially researchers proposed an aluminium body but advances in carbon fibre from Cranfield’s work on wing materials for British Aerospace mean that is now the favoured material.
