Courtaulds Chemicals has selected Trolex’s TX6221 flame and spark sensors to protect against dust explosions at its Celacol plant at Sponden in Derby.

Celacol – methyl cellulose – is used in a variety of foods. The raw material is wood pulp, which is subject to the hammering forces of an attritor and subsequent heating. Largest particles can become trapped and form burning embers.

The IS-certified sensor detects low frequency IR radiation caused by these embers at 1-2.8 micron wavelengths. It has an 800msec response time and is also capable of detecting reflected IR, giving it a 360sr vision.
