A free copy of HSE guidance on substitutes for white asbestos banned in many applications is available from seals and gaskets maker Flexitallic. It can recommend suitable substitute materials from its own range of products. White asbestos is found in braided and laminated packings, proofed asbestos cloths and tapes and moulded gland packings. Flexitallic says compressed asbestos fibre mixed with rubber is still used by some gasket manufacturers.
