No touch transmission avoids backlash

A new concept in gearboxes for spindle applications provides transmission of torque through magnetised wheels so there is no backlash and wear is minimal.

Motor vibration cannot be transmitted through the spindle to the tool head, says vendor Servodynamic.

The ‘no touch’ torque transmission avoids noise and lubrication problems of mechanical gearboxes but has overload protection.

Perma-Gear magnetic gearboxes give outputs in the range 10,000-15,000rpm and torques from 8-120Nm.

Visio claims compatability with legacy data and other performance benefits for IntelliCad, the AutoCad 14 compatible design software, at a price of around £400 when it is released.

A pre-release version on CD-rom is available for testers to evaluate dwg file exchange data integrity as well as productivity claims.

The software supports popular customisation features found in AutoCad and new entities. Extras include a full, event-driven version of Microsoft Visual Basic Applications Edition.

Not available in AutoCad is a multiple document interface from IntelliCad which permits simultaneous editing of multiple drawings as well as the ability to cut, copy and paste drawing entities between windows.

Testers can make use of Visio’s Web site www.visio.com/IntelliCAD.

Bolted joint specialist Westcom has developed Boltcalc, a Windows-based software package to help engineers design reliable bolted joints and so avoid potential disaster.

It can be used to analyse existing or new bolted joint designs. If a joint will fail, the calculations highlight the cause, whether from insufficient clamping, direct overload, or fatigue failure.

Boltcalc is said to be simple to use, with automatic entry of standard information such as thread pitch and other dimensions once the diameter is entered.

Rotabroach RCV annular cutters have four times the life of an ordinary cutter, producing before regrind up to 1,000 32mm diameter fastening holes in 18mm thick high grade steel piling.

Wear resistance makes them suitable for drilling any high alloy material.

Hole making is faster than using a conventional twist drill because the annular cutting action removes the metal as a complete slug.

The tooth formation ensures that the metal clears the tool cleanly. On machine tools, cutters need less power and thrust.
