PLM Redfearn manufactures bottles for soft drinks, beer and cider and is often required to produce bottles with shrink wrapped sleeves for the ever increasing `designer’ drink market.
A high speed inspection system was required by PLM Redfearn for decorated bottles coming off the production line at the company’s Barnsley plant. The Checker system from Image Industries was chosen as the solution.
The Checker system has been installed on two of the production lines: the automatic vision system checking that the sleeve is applied and is in the correct position on each model and rejecting any misfits. The first Checker system was installed in 1998 with installation being carried out by Image Industries, providing a high speed inspection system. Tim Sagar, technical manager at PLM Redfearn said: “We were hesitant when ordering an automatic inspection system due to bad experiences we have had in the past with other visual systems. The sale or return scheme available from Image Industries meant we could confidently purchase a Checker system without worry.”
Approximately 250 bottles per minute are produced by each production line. The fast shutter speed of the Checker system camera ensures that a clear image is obtained of every bottle manufactured. During the production process, the PVC sleeving is cut to length and fed onto each bottle before passing through a heating system which shrinks the sleeve to fit the bottle. Using a backlight, the vision system camera captures an image of the bottle profile to ensure the correct positioning of the sleeve. The presence of a reject causes a signal to be sent to a solenoid, which automatically pushes the part from the line. The second production line was installed by PLM engineers. Sagar commented: “The Checker system was quick and easy to install.”
