Visitors to the Yes Tomorrow’s World Live show in Birmigham will have seen the world’s first diesel-powered engine developed for a military motorbike. Dr Stuart McGuigan and John Crocker at the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham, designed and built the power unit. To keep costs realistic, the crankcase, primary transmission and gearbox are based on the Enfield Bullet, a 1950s British design now built in India. A single cylinder engine and high speed, automotive diesel engine technology ensure that performance meets the demands of the battlefield as well as general courier duties.
